What causes nappy rash by Dr Shah
Nappy rashes are a common skin concern for parents with young children. Most babies will experience nappy rash at some point before they are toilet-trained, but the development and refinement of super absorbent nappy technology over the years has helped to reduce the severity and frequency of nappy rash.
Nappy rashes are usually caused by prolonged contact of urine and faeces with the sensitive skin in the baby's nappy area. Nappy rash also occurs more often when the baby has diarrhoea or begins to eat solid food.
Parents can help minimise the chances that their baby will develop a nappy rash by frequently changing nappies, gently cleansing the nappy area after every bowel movement and by using a barrier ointment. If the nappy rash persists or is severe, then parents should consult their healthcare provider.
